BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Joe Golden served NOAA (U.S. Dept. of Commerce) in a number of progressively more responsible positions during his 42.5 years of Federal service in both research and operations, including forecasting. He retired from Federal service in 2005, and then served as a Senior Research Scientist in CIRES until 2009. Dr. Golden is a world-renowned expert on waterspouts, tornadoes and hurricanes, and has often been interviewed on live national network television news broadcasts, including Ted Koppel on "NIGHTLINE." He has given invited scientific testimony on weather modification technologies before U.S. Senate Subcommittees. He has also given talks over his lengthy career to public civic organizations, schools and at scientific meetings around the globe.

Dr. Golden is known for his animated personality, and use of understandable, non-technical language. His talks are vividly illustrated with extensive color slides and spectacular video footage of waterspouts, tornadoes, hurricanes and other weather phenomena. He stays within prescribed time constraints, allowing ample time for Q&A, and leaves his audience wanting more.

Dr. Golden is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, and his biography has appeared in the last ten consecutive editions of Who’s Who in America and recent Who’s Who in the World.

Dr. Golden’s early career began in Miami in the mid 1960‘s, as a Hurricane Specialist at the National Hurricane Center. He then pursued his research interest in tornadoes and severe storms at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, Norman, OK, and led the formation of the original Tornado Intercept Project portrayed in the movie “TWISTER.”

PRESENTATIONS
1."Global climate change: Making sense out of controversy." Dr. Golden vividly illustrates the growing scientific consensus regarding global climate change, including possible changes in hurricanes and heavy rainfall worldwide.

2. “Scientific tornado-chasing: What have we learned about tornadoes?”
Beginning with the recent movies “TWISTER”, “Into the Storm”.
“Supercell-2023” and their origins, Dr. Golden traces the exciting history of tornado chasing,

3. “Waterspouts: the wet-whirlwind cousin to the tornado!”
Dr. Golden shows spectacular slides and video of waterspouts around the world, including the Florida Keys, the world’s waterspout capital and the Mediterranean

4. “Weather Modification around the world (including the Chinese Summer Olympics!)”
Dr. Golden will describe recent advances in weather modification technology, its operations in , and its application in the U.S., So. America, and Euope to increase seasonal snowpack and summer showers, and to again attack hurricane modification.

5. “Chasing Hurricanes in the air and on the ground.”
Dr. Golden illustrates his personal experiences chasing hurricanes with color films of NOAA hurricane-hunter flights and hurricane intercepts on the U.S. coast.

6. “The art and science of hurricane forecasting”
Dr. Golden will describe in layman’s terms how modern hurricane forecasting utilizes a “man-machine mix” to produce improved forecasts of hurricane track and intensity.

7. "Recent breakthroughs in tornado-chasing using new technology"
Dr. Golden shows new scientific breakthroughs in understanding tornado structure and windspeeds using portable Doppler radars, ruggedized surface probes and armored vehicles.

8. “Possible future trends in Atlantic Hurricane Activity”
Dr. Golden summarizes the latest scientific results about a possible change in hurricane frequency, intensity, and forward speed over the tropical oceans.

9. “Weather Forecasting Challenges over this cruise”
Dr. Golden will give an overview of expected weather during the cruise using satellite, surface data and the latest computer model forecasts along the ship's route.
