PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH:
BIOGRAPHY
Jeff trained as a Mechanical Engineer and qualified as a Chartered Engineer ( C.Eng ). He initially served in the Royal Air Force.

He later spent 23 years teaching at the Royal Military College of Science (The Army University ) now known as the Defence Academy where he developed a passion for WW2 having associated with many senior military commanders.

On retirement he became a Battlefield Tour Guide for two leading tour operators escorting groups to Normandy, Arnhem and the sites of the Dambuster Raid. He has also guided in Italy, Malaya and Singapore and has visited most of the major battlefield sites world-wide.

Since retirement he regularly gives WW2 presentations to Independent Schools and local organizations including U3A, PROBUS, Royal Aeronautical Society, British Legion and others.

Since March 2009 he has been a regular Guest Speaker on cruise ships and has made over 350 presentations on WW2 world wide.. His very popular talks are praised for being well informed and well balanced. They are supported by excellent power point images and are enjoyed by all members of the family .His lectures are very well attended and he receives excellent reports from Cruise Directors.

Jeff is accompanied on board with his wife Cynthia and they enjoy meeting passengers especially if they have any anecdotes relating to WW2.
TALK TITLES
ATLANTIC OCEAN

DUNKIRK (OPERATION DYNAMO) MAY/JUNE 1940
This talk includes the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and his early conquests. It describes how the German attack on Western Europe using the ‘Blitzkrieg’ tactics completely overwhelm the Allies , resulting in the defeat of Holland, Belgium and France. The main focus is on the epic evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunkirk.

D-DAY 6th JUNE 1944 (OPERATION OVERLORD)
This talk describes the planning of this vast operation and the Allied landings on the five beaches in Normandy together with the Airborne landings and the capture of the vital Pegasus Bridge.

BATTLE OF NORMANDY
The 11 weeks of bitter fighting following D –Day. This talk tells of the costly struggle to overcome the fanatical German resistance in the Normandy hedgerows (The Bocage ) and eventually how the Germans collapsed and were decimated in the Falaise Gap.

BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC 1939 – 45
The most crucial battle of WW2. This talk covers the destruction of the mighty German battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst and how the menace of the deadly U-Boats was finally overcome after crippling Allied shipping losses. It also describes the extreme hardships endured by the Russian convoys.

SINKING THE GRAF SPEE & BISMARCK
These two dangerous German warships were a dire threat to the Allied shipping. This talk tells how they were hunted down and finally destroyed by the Royal Navy after epic naval engagements.The Grar Spee in the ' Battle of the River Plate ' and the mighty Bismarck in the Atlantic

GERMAN INVASION OF NORWAY 1940
This talk describes the highly successful German surprise invasion of Norway and the muddled Allied response, which led to the downfall of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. He was replaced by the Winston Churchill. It also describes the daring commando raid on the Heavy Water plant which prevented Germany from developing Atomic weapons.

LIFE AND TIMES OF WINSTON CHURCHILL 1874 - 1965
Winston Churchill was a fearless soldier who became England's greatest Statesman and icon leader during WW2 where his leadership and magnificent speaches galvanised the Nation to victory.Of all the politicians he was the best speaker, the best writer and most humorous and was awarded a Nobel Prize and voted 'the Man Of The Century'

MEDITERRANEAN

NORTH AFRICA & SICILY 1941 - 43
The story of 3 famous Generals – Rommel ( The Desert Fox ), Montgomery and Patton and their gruelling battles in the harsh North African desert. It also tell of the vital and heroic part played by besieged Malta.

ITALIAN CAMPAIGN 1943 – 45
The bitter struggle for Italy including conquest of Sicily the perilous landings at Salerno and Anzio plus the costly battles for Monte Cassino. It also includes the rise and fall of Mussolini the fascist dictator.

BALTIC

GERMAN INVASION OF RUSSIA (OPERATION BARBAROSSA) JUNE 1941
The nightmare campaign where millions of lives were lost. This talk describes how the ruthless German attack was eventually stopped at the gates of Moscow. It also includes the Siege of Leningrad ( now St Petersburg ) and the battles for Stalingrad and Kursk.

DAMBUSTER RAID (OPERATION CHASTISE) MAY 1943
The most spectacular air raid of WW2 carried out by Bomber Command on the great dams of Western Germany. This very popular talk and describes the development of the ’ bouncing bombs ‘ and the legendary raid in great detail.

ARNHEM (OPERATION MARKET GARDEN) Sept. 1944
This talk describes the disastrous defeat of the British 1st Airborne in their heroic attempt to capture the ‘ Bridge to Far ’ over the Lower Rhine at Arnhem. This was caused by a tragedy of errors.

FAR EAST

PEARL HARBOUR Dec 1941
The devastating Japanese surprise air attack on the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour in the Hawaiian Islands which brought America into WW2.

THE FALL OF SINGAPORE Feb. 1942
The greatest British military disaster. This talks how 30 000 Japanese overcame the island fortress of Singapore in just 6 days resulting in the capture of over 80 000 Allied troops.

THE JAPANESE ONSLAUGHT ON S E ASIA 1940-45
This talk describes the Japanese conquests in China and SE Asia. It includes the day of infamy when on 7th Dec.1941 they invaded Hong Kong, Malaya, the Philippines and Pearl Harbour . They then stormed on and were unstoppable until finally halted on the Indian border and New Guinea.

PACIFIC WAR 1942 – 45
This talk tells how the Japanese were finally defeated by the Allies in SE Asia and by the might of the US in the Pacific in spite of the deadly Kamikaze attacks and fanatical resistance. Dropping two atomic bombs on Japan in Aug. 1945 dramatically ended WW2.

GALLIPOLI 1915
One of the greatest Allied military disasters of WW1. After 9 months of bitter fighting against the Turks, resulting in huge losses with no gains, the Allies were forced to evacuate the Gallipoli peninsular.

CRIMEAN WAR 1853-56
The costly fight against the Russians and disease. This talk covers the Siege of Sevastopol, the Charge of the Light Brigade and the work of Florence Nightingale.

WW1 (The Great War) 1914-18 NOTE: 2014 is the 100th anniversary
This talk discusses the origins of WW1 and gives an overview of the main battles e.g. Ypres, the Somme and Verdun and the appalling loss of life . It describes life in the trenches and the Christmas truce of 1914. It covers the Naval engagements including the Battle of Jutland and the Air power together with the Zeppelin raids.

WARTIME REVIEW 1939-45
This talk describes life, on the Home Front and PoW camps. It also includes the Battle of Britain, the Blitz and the story of Douglas Bader the intrepid legless pilot plus a profile on the indefatigable Winston Churchill.
