BIOGRAPHY
Dick is Professor Emeritus of Geology, having retired in 2002 after 38 years of teaching and research at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He received his BA at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), his MA at the University of Missouri-Columbia, spent a year in Finland as a Fulbright Fellow, and his Ph.D. at Stanford University. He and wife Beatrice have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.

His specialty in geology is the study of sedimentary rocks, what they tell us about Earth’s history, and the economic deposits they contain, including iron, uranium, and gold. He has spent 22 summers working for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Minnesota Geological Survey. He has published 91 papers, 90 abstracts, 8 books, and has co-authored 12 geological maps. His ROADSIDE GEOLOGY OF MINNESOTA, written for non-geologists, was published by Mountain Press of Missoula MT in 2009 as a volume in its national Roadside Geology Series. He has presented dozens of illustrated lectures on several cruise lines for the past 30 years in most parts of the world. He teaches a gratis course each year for UMD’s University For Seniors. He has had research projects on all 7 continents, including Antarctica.

He has received the University of Minnesota’s Morse-Amoco Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education, the S.S. Goldich Medal for Contributions to the Geology of the Lake Superior Region, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Helsinki, the Anderson Award for Research and Teaching from the University of Minnesota Duluth, is a member of the Academy of the College of Science and Engineering at UMD, and a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers of the University of Minnesota.

However, he says that his main job continues to be serving as taster of recipes developed by his food-writer wife, Beatrice, for her 31 cookbooks.
