PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH:
BIOGRAPHY
Ted Bourn graduated in Marine Biology from Liverpool University in 1972, and then later that year joined BRNC Dartmouth as a Graduate Entry Seaman Officer. Postings then followed in the Fishery Protection vessel HMS KINGFISHER and as the Navigator of the Frigate HMS ARETHUSA. He then served as a Warfare Officer in the Destroyer HMS NORFOLK and the Frigate HMS ARDENT.

On qualification as a Specialist Navigator, Ted joined the Staff of the Captain 8th Frigate Squadron in the SEAWOLF anti-missile missile fitted HMS ANDROMEDA which was sailed south immediately for the Falklands Conflict. For the duration of the war, ANDROMEDA was employed as a ‘Goal Keeping’ frigate stationed up Exocet missile threat from the Carrier HMS INVINCIBLE.

A two year Exchange followed with the Royal Australian Navy as the Navigator of the 28,000 Ton Tanker HMAS SUPPLY. This ship was named after HMS SUPPLY of the First Fleet to Australia. This historical connection led to a deep interest in the Real Reasons why the British despatched the First Fleet and colonised Australia. On return to the UK, Command was taken of the Fishery Protection ship HMS ANGLESEY.

Ted left the Royal Navy and gained an MBA Degree from Warwick University before becoming the Director of the St Bees Management Centre in Cumbria. He was however invited to rejoin the Navy to utilise Specialist Navigator expertise and then served in the MoD in Bristol to raise the Navigation Procurement Requirements for all RN ships.

Since retirement, Ted has taken several cruises and still finds the experience of holding absolutely nil responsibility for the safe navigation of the ship exceptionally strange. Over time, this feeling is expected to fade!

Since retirement Ted is happy to talk on Australian History, past and modern Navigation, along with International Maritime Law.
