PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH: |
|
Penny loves travel and geography. She has visited all seven continents of the world, but her first and foremost passion is for cold climates. She is an experienced and popular speaker on cruise ships and genuinely enjoys speaking to guests on board. Penny has been asked to do workshops on board ship, produce articles for inhouse cruise magazines and is a confident and knowledgeable speaker when giving bridge talks.
She studied Geography at the University of Cambridge and this fuelled her interest in the historical geography of South America and Middle America, as well as Polar regions. Her enthusiasm for cold places has been complemented by expeditions in the Arctic (Norway, Svalbard, Greenland) and extensive travel in polar areas, including Antarctica, for over 40 years. Penny’s academic studies, particularly in Polar Studies at the Scott Polar Research Institute, has given her a strong background and knowledge of polar regions. She has been a Research Associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute. Her interests are eclectic, covering physical and human geography, geology, explorers, indigenous peoples and the history of the whaling industry. Penny has an extensive library of polar books, and a collection of Inuit art and antique maps. Given her Norwegian heritage several talks draw upon her family history. Professionally, she worked as an educator, specializing in environmental topics.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Honorary Secretary of the Arctic Club (a club for Arctic explorers founded in 1932) and in 2022 she was President.
