David Ottley is a retired police officer who served in both the Metropolitan Police and with Cambridgeshire Constabulary. In the late 1970's he became the youngest detective in the Metropolitan Police. During his C.I.D service he served on the Regional Crime Squad, Robbery Squad, and was Exhibits Officer on the Major Incident Pool in central London. In 1990 he transferred to Cambridgeshire and when John Major became Prime Minister and was employed on his personal protection team. At the end of Sir John’s term of office he became an observer on the Police Helicopter and the driver of the armed response vehicle. During his service he received a number of commendations for bravery and investigative excellence.

Having retired from the service David studied Global Warming and Ecosystems with Reading University and continued on to Southampton University where he studied Oceanography and Marine Archaeology.

Since 2014 David has worked in the field of genealogy for one of the leading companies in the field. He has been involved in, and appeared in the television program Heir Hunters throughout this time. He is still employed as a senior investigator in this field.

A keen fly fisherman and golf fanatic he was captain of the Lakeside Lodge Golf Club in Cambridgeshire in 2011 and also serves on the committee of his local fly fishing facility.

David is an enrichment speaker and a destination speaker covering subjects from genealogy, ecosystems and global warming to marine archaeology and oceanography. He also has a plethora of lectures concerning his career in the police including protection of the prime minister and police aviation history to his later career in genealogy.

1. Heir Hunters.
David gives an insight to the investigation of family trees and the investigation of estates of the deceased. For some years David has worked in the genealogy sector for one of the leading companies in the field, and has appeared on the television program of the same name. The lecture covers the initial reporting of intestate cases up until the delivery of the inheritance to the beneficiaries.

2 Global Warming, Fact or Fiction.
A factual lecture but delivered in a different style. Because of the speakers police background the audience will be the jury in the trial of the human race, having been charged with causing global warming. There will be evidence from the prosecution, the defence and the judge will sum up the case. The audience will decide…….

2. Ecosystems
A factual lecture describing various types of ecosystems on planet earth, the effects both positive and negative of human intervention, and the ways in which these effects can be managed. Stunning examples from China and Africa will both amaze and cause concern.

3. Police Aviation, the history of the bobby in the air.
This lecture covers the history of police use of the airborne platform from its infancy on the coast of Florida, through the trials of a number of different aircraft and balloons, to the present situation. It covers the training of officers and contains some amusing and surprising information.

4. Prime Minister Sir John Major and his protection
This lecture gives an insight into the logistics required in the protection of the Prime Minister and his family not just on official business but also whilst off duty at his home in Cambridgeshire. It is told from ground level by one of the officers engaged in his protection. An informative and amusing lecture.

5. Policing in the 1970`s The real Life on Mars
This amusing lecture describes what it was like to join the Metropolitan Police in London in the 1970s. It deals with the training and educational requirements and details being the first young officer to be posted to a station since the Second World War. It contains a number of strange and amusing tales of cases dealt with by the embryonic officer “Orribal Ottley”.

6. 1980`s Detective, Ashes to Ashes.
The second part of a police trilogy. This lecture deals with the embryonic officer’s rise into the Criminal Investigation Department and the changes in dress and language required in the 1980s. It too contains many amusing stories concerning being a detective in a slightly less politically correct time.

7. Pirates.
This is a factual history of the pirates that operate in the golf of Aden. It covers the reasons for the commencement of the piracy, from the days of the voluntary coast guard service, up until the present day protection zone, imposed by a multi national naval flotilla.

8. Marine archaeology.
A history of the subject from the early days of archaeology through to modern times. This lecture can be varied to include finds made in the various ports of call of the ship.

9. Oceanography
This lecture includes the history of the subject right through to the present finds being made in the bottom of the oceans of today. It also covers ocean floor mapping and the future for the finds being made today.


David has prepared destination and port lectures on hundreds of ports throughout Central America, Europe, the Middle East, India and Scandinavia. Too many to list but these lectures can be detailed if required.
David has lectured aboard Cruise and Maritime Voyages, MSC, Princess, Celebrity and Voyages of Discovery since 2010.
